JOB TITLE: Construction Intern

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt Seasonal

DEPARTMENT: One Percent Construction

SUPERVISOR: One Percent Construction Manager

SALARY: $18.00

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The City Construction Department internship program provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on exposure in their chosen field. Most interns work during their summer breaks between academic sessions.

While interning with the City of Cheyenne, students may be assigned to various areas of the city including construction job sites, project engineering, project administration, and field design and data collection management.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete a meaningful experience that prepares interns for a successful transition to challenging and rewarding careers.
  • Expose interns to a wide range of construction observation and design activities and let them dive deep into a few areas.
  • Ability to understand and interpret a variety of technical and analytical reports, correspondence, reference files, and records.
  • Assist with surveys and construction inspections to gather field data and update maps.
  • Operate a variety of survey, inspection, mapping, drafting, and general engineering equipment in a safe and effective manner.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Construction Department with miscellaneous office duties such as correspondence, plan reviews, document reviews, and/or updating files or maps etc.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • G.I.S. (Geographic Information Systems) computer software.
  • Basic survey techniques.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office. AutoCAD and/ or Microstation design software is preferred.
  • Operational characteristics of engineering equipment and tools.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Perform basic surveys and inspections and gather field data, update maps.
  • Operate a variety of general engineering equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

Ideal candidates may be incoming juniors or seniors in high school, or enrolled students in pursuit of a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field of study.

Must possess a valid state issued drivers license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Indoor and outdoor environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, inclement weather conditions, and construction equipment and construction conditions such as dust, mud, hot oil, cement dust or other construction materials. Indoor environment working with machinery, work closely with others.
