Marketing & Social Media Specialist – Zoo

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under direction of the Management Assistant, this position will manage the zoo’s social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube) and cultivate and maintain marketing assets with local, regional, and national media outlets. To support these initiatives, this position will be responsible for creating original, compelling and engaging video and photographic content telling the Abilene Zoo’s stories and supporting the zoo’s mission of education and conservation

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position does not exercise supervisory duties.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under the direction of the Management Assistant, follow the marketing plan with budget considerations and input from Abilene Zoo leadership.

Oversee day-to-day management of organic social media and using calendar management systems like Sprout Social, Meltwater, Hootsuite, etc., which will include posting all content across numerous social channels as well as developing content concepts from idea to completion.

Maximize consumer engagement on social media, including timely comment and direct message moderation/responses.

Work with Marketing team to brainstorm and develop content ideas; design and oversee marketing materials.

Stay up-to-date on new social media trends, tools, techniques, and best practices; monitor competitors and other social media leaders.

Monitor and report on social media key performance indicators on an ongoing basis, using data to inform both large and small pivots to improve performance.

Work with the Management Assistant to ensure content is informative, engaging and on brand in order to enhance the zoo’s online presence, drive engagement and cultivate a strong online community.

Utilize strong analytical skills interpreting data to make recommendations for adjusting the social media marketing strategy for optimal results.

Design creative for social media posts using either Adobe Creative Suite or Canva in order to develop and curate engaging written, photographic & video content so it aligns with the zoo’s brand and appeals to target audiences.

Work with internal teams to schedule photo and video shoots for upcoming social media and blog posts.

Cultivate relationships with zoo team to develop open communication about what events and stories are happening to promote zoo happenings including, but not limited to special events, fundraisers, animal exhibits, and conservation initiatives.

Responsible for curating, organizing and managing digital assets, including images, videos, testimonials, reviews, etc.

Assist the Management Assistant with media inquiries, visits, mailers and management of guest bloggers/influencers.

Operate City vehicles, Zoo rides, attractions, and other motorized equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Marketing principles utilized within the industry.

Operating a DSLR camera, smartphone camera, and video camera with an eye for capturing captivating visuals.

Operating various computer applications.

Programs such as Constant Contact, Sprout Social, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google slides and all social media platforms.

Social Media best practices.

Skill to:

Flexible, detail-oriented, organized and ability to respond to multiple demands.

Create and publish email campaigns/promotions; provide KPIs on email promotions.

Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as with a team

Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to listen perceptively

Exceptional written and oral communication skills including strong writing, editing and presentation abilities

Ability and willingness to work outside regular business hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Photography/videography production and editing

Excellent computer skills including all Microsoft Office programs especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Mail and Adobe Creative Suite

Ability to:

Negotiate and purchase media time and advertising space.

Maintain open, timely and accurate communication with direct leadership.

A strong affinity for the mission of the Abilene Zoo

Help author and/or edit content for the zoo’s web, email and blog.

Work independently with minimal supervision.

Have professional demeanor and appearance.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

One (1) year of related experience in marketing and/or social media in a professional setting is preferred.

Education/Training:

Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, or a related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to periodically work outside regular business hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
