PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for providing the leadership, strategic planning, and oversight of the marketing and communications efforts conducted by the Seattle Indian Health Board (SIHB) and the Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI). This position will work closely with SIHB and UIHI leadership to ensure communications initiatives, marketing campaigns, and outreach events and activities are aligned with the organizations mission and goals. Specifically, the Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for strategic planning and analysis; content and design development; SIHB and UIHI OMH online digital presence (websites and social media channels); outreach (including media relations) and events planning; and internal communications.
KEY JOB DUTIES:
Strategy, Planning, and Analysis
- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing strategic plan that advances the goals of the organization, in keeping with organizational and departmental leadership needs and considers the needs of our community members and stakeholders.
- Lead, develop, implement, and evaluate communications, marketing, and outreach activities to reflect and enhance the quality and integrity of the organization and the range of services and resources provided. Use effective project management principles and tools as well as prioritization to ensure activities are carried out professionally and according to timeline.
- Determine baseline targets/benchmarks, monitor, and evaluate success metrics for these marketing and communications efforts. Make revisions to the communications strategies and action plans as needed to improve desired outcomes.
Develop Content and Design
- Develop and manage publications across print, online, and multimedia; including writing and editing content and graphic design to produce high quality materials. Ensure content and design are culturally relevant for American Indian and Alaska Native audiences.
- Create and edit materials including web and social media content, press releases, advertisements, reports, fact sheets, presentations, policy briefs, and proposals, etc. Ensure all content and materials reflect a level of excellence in professionalism and quality.
- Consider our primary, secondary, and specialized audiences and how they might receive and interpret our information and plan to tailor messages, materials, and methods of communication (print, web, social media, person-to-person, traditional media, etc.) accordingly.
- Develop key messages and materials for the organization, departments, and special projects to ensure clear language is used, key points are covered, and a mix of facts and figures, narrative or stories, descriptive language, visuals, graphics, and multimedia are used.
- Increase opportunities to tell the success stories and positive impacts of the organization including program spotlights, media outreach and press releases, event highlights, presentations, videos, and other possibilities.
Outreach and Public Relations
- Serve as a media liaison and appropriately respond to media inquiries and/or link journalists or other external requestors to available leadership staff or subject matter experts as needed.
- Oversee planning for and/or participate in major public relations events and outreach activities in support of the organization and community engagement.
- Develop relationships and foster collaboration with local community, state, and national partners to build awareness and strengthen opportunities for collective action to improve the health and well-being of American Indians and Alaska Natives.
- Develop and maintain an inventory of standard organizational communication materials, media toolkits and press releases, promotional materials, and branded items for public relations, community outreach, and meetings with key stakeholders.
Internal Communications
- Oversee internal communications and support CEO in all-agency communications.
- Develop methods to enhance and improve communication about key issues to staff across all departments and staffing levels in a timely manner.
- Develop organizational communications guidelines, procedures, and brand use standards for staff to establish and maintain a consistent, professional look to all SIHB and UIHI OMH materials.
- Review materials for consistency and conformance to communications and brand standards as needed.
General Task:
- Provide project management and communications for the UIHI Office of Minority Health Demystifying Data project.
- Oversee and implement Communications Team support for requests for marketing or communications assistance from departments and work closely with them to develop and implement effective campaigns according to available resources.
- Lead Communications Team and supervise the Communications Specialist along with the action items carried out by other departmental staff and vendors completing special communications activities.
- Manage vendor relations and execution of organizational communications and marketing work conducted by contractors as needed.
- Manage communications and marketing budget for special campaigns, contractor services, promotional items, advertising, signage, or other expenses.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
Masters Degree in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, Public Health, or related field.
Experience:
Five or more years of experience working with AI/AN communities in communications, health promotion, health care services, or public health. Four or more years of experience in health communication and/or health promotion and dissemination. Experience in strategic planning, managing websites and social media as well as using Microsoft Office, graphic design and photo editing software, e-marketing programs, databases, spreadsheets, and content management systems. Experience in project management, team leadership, and supervision of staff.
Skills/Knowledge:
- Familiarity with health and social issues facing AI/ANs and a desire to promote the delivery of appropriate health services, traditional Indian medicine, community services, resources, and informational materials to this population.
- Knowledge of processes involved in planning, implementing, and evaluating communication activities and programs services.
- Knowledge of effective communication and dissemination techniques and methods.
- Knowledge of emerging trends and media practices as they apply to developing and carrying out health and communication projects.
- Writing print and online communications for multiple channels and tactics (websites, social media, print, brochures, presentations, articles, procedures, and FAQs, etc.).
- Knowledge of establishing and adhering to content, editorial, graphic design, and brand standards.
- Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills.
- Experience coordinating and overseeing work of multi-disciplinary staff.
Ability to:
- Plan, manage, implement, and evaluate comprehensive communications and marketing strategies and activities.
- Prepare complex documents as well as concisely translate health information into a variety of materials for primary and specialized audiences.
- Exercise initiative and judgment to accomplish assigned tasks.
- Effectively present/advocate organizational information and issues to a variety of audiences.
- Develop and manage website and social media content.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors, public officials, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and with the general public.
- Proficiently use software programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe and Windows-based applications.
- Learn new skills, technologies, and methods as needed to build organizational communications capacity and stay current with emerging media technologies.
Work Environment:
- SIHB staff work four (4) ten (10) hour shifts per week on site. Standard hours are 7 am to 6 pm, 4 days a week, with occasional extra hours for events or to meet deadlines.
- Work varied hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
- Some travel may be required.
