The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Security Department is looking for a Compliance Engineer to join the Information Security Services (ISS) team. The ISS unit manages NNL’s public utterance program, vault-type room policy, case-specific information protection strategies, resolution of data control issues, need-to-know policy, historical record reviews, classified material storage and destruction policy, and frequently interfaces with teams across NNL.
This position offers the opportunity to gain expertise with the application of security requirements while working with a broad range of Naval Reactors Program technical and business communities. The duties and responsibilities of this position require the ability to interact professionally with individuals across NNL, BPMI, and the government including collaboration and consultation with subject matter experts. The newest team member is expected to drive process improvements and gain alignment between various stakeholders at all levels up to and including Naval Reactors Headquarters.
Responsibilities may include:
- Administration and improvements for the recently implemented file inspection software, Purifile
- Implementation of automation for the management of the Prime Contractor Public Utterance submittals
- Collaborate on the development of information protection strategies in support of the Advanced Technology Innovation Pipeline (ATIP)
- Develop policy to support NNL’s contributions to the Australia/US/UK Program
- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) declassification reviews of historical records.
Ability to qualify as Derivative Classifier will be required, if not already achieved, in order to maximize the selected candidate’s ability to perform key tasks.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience or;
- Master’s degree in a degree in a technical, engineering or science-related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience or;
- Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified or qualified SIT and three years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program.

- Excellent critical thinking skills
- Experience in the Naval Reactors Program (Shipyard, Laboratory, or Navy)
- Experience with implementing DOE or DOD information protection and classification policies

Pay Range
$105,600 – $158,400 annually
