POSITION PURPOSE
The Gymnastics Specialty Instructor is expected to have a high degree of knowledge and a high level of formal training in gymnastics. Provide support and encouragement to assist students in learning the specific progressive or competitive program. Provide appropriate level of officiating for the age and experience of the participants in the progressive or competitive sports program, Ensure safety and cleanliness of the program area and adherence to all YMCA safety standards and rules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct YMCA gymnastics instruction in accordance with YMCA program standards. Ensure adherence to USAG/ YMCA progressive or competitive standards and quality.
- Provide a safe environment that allows members and participants to learn the YMCA gymnastics curriculum.
- Encourage and support staff and students to provide an enjoyable YMCA.
- Reinforce the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility through example and recognition of participant displays of character.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before scheduled class session to be prepared with the equipment set up and ready to begin at the scheduled start time. Be reliable and inform the supervisor of any conflicts at least 24 hours before the work day of any issues or items required.
- Ensure that all participants have exited the facility and that the facility is left clean and orderly.
- Participate as a part of the YMCA staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment.
- Provide excellent service to members and participants.
- Communicate all YMCA rules and ensure that you are accessible and identifiable.
- Manage participant behavior using a collaborative approach with supervision and parents.
- Complete timely reports of incidents to the director/supervisor, complaints or compliments of the program.
- Follow detailed schedule provided by the leader/supervisor and have the knowledge and understanding of the gymnastics skills required to implement the lesson plans
- Follow approved positive support techniques to develop and refine gymnast’s skills.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Some college or equivalent
- 3-5 years gymnastics experience
- Strong knowledge of gymnastics and competitions including experience at the National state and/ or national level.
- Acquire and maintain nationally recognized certifications in teaching gymnastics
- USAG Safety Certification for competitions preferred
- Ability to work with and be sensitive to others while always portraying a positive style of coaching.
- Ability to perform activities which require sustained concentration and attention.
- Ability to physically assist (spot) the gymnast through skills with a clear understanding of developing the athlete.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information and to convey detailed, spoken instructions to staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately, quickly, and loudly. Ability to perceive the nature of sounds by ear; ability to lift and carry 50-75 pounds; ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling. Ability to move about on foot quickly; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where they actually are and clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.
Acquire and maintain the following certifications:
- CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
- Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
- Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
- Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
