About Our Opportunity

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of seasonal Guest Services Representative at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, within the Department of Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities. This position is part-time, approximately 15-20 hours per week. The Guest Services Representative will have cash handling and customer service responsibilities, and will also undertake data entry tasks for the admissions and guest services operation. The individual in this position will also assist with daily educational programming (both indoors and outdoors) at the Nature Center as needed.

Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour

Schedule: This is a temporary, year-round position for an individual who will work approximately 15-20 hours per week, including some weekend hours.

Benefits: This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

This position will remain open until filled or until a sufficient number of applications have been received.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accept payments for admission to the Nature Center, using a point of sale (POS) system.
  • Answers questions from the general public regarding matters of animal care, habits, laws, safety and/or identifications.
  • May assist the daily educational programming as needed.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to guests by providing center and wildlife information and answering questions from center visitors.
  • Performs administrative duties by answering calls, ordering supplies, taking and writing minutes for staff meetings, and completing procurement card reports.
  • Enters data into database/spreadsheet program.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency (Required)
  • One (1) year of cash handling and/or customer service experience (Required)
  • Data entry experience (Preferred)

Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of procedures and practices to analyze and resolve unusual or difficult problems.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.
  • Ability to conduct basic research of existing, internal policies and procedures
  • Ability to share information with a direct supervisor or coworkers; no formal report is compiled.
  • Ability to speak and interact with large crowds.
  • Ability to think creatively for work practices and/or for program improvement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
  • Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathered.

ADA Compliance:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
