NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Salary Range
$88,600 – $172,300
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like
Sandia National Laboratories is seeking to hire an experienced and highly motivated Electrical Engineer to support the development of in-house electrical design and engineering capabilities within this group! This new group will provide Sandia with the internal capability to self-execute facilities design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico.
We are looking for a detail/results-orientated and passionate teaming individual to support a dynamic group of architects, designers and engineers in the development, design, and construction of building and infrastructure projects.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Lead the electrical design for building or other system modifications including code compliance.
- Create, update, and implement technical system specifications for the design of low voltage and primary distribution voltage electrical systems.
- Perform the following activities:
- Electrical system analysis, prepare design drawings, develop cost, and schedule estimates.
- Modeling of electrical systems.
- Single and three-phase load and voltage drop analysis and select materials and equipment to mitigate anomalies.
- System protection coordination analysis and select over-current protective devices.
- Cable pulling calculations, size, and place equipment to facilitate cable pulling.
- Power factor analysis and identify power factor correction solutions.
- Lighting analysis and select lighting devices and equipment.
- Lightning protection analysis and design lightning protection systems.
- Motor analyses.
- Arc Flash hazards analyses.
- Distribution pole loading analysis and select the proper poles to withstand loading.
- Distribution system losses analysis and design system improvements to minimize losses.
- Root-cause analyses to determine causes of electrical system failures.
- Preventive measure data analysis.
- Design new or modify existing motor control centers.
- Design renewable energy systems not greater than 10MW.
- Assess the impacts of renewable energy systems on the existing distribution system.
- Research and test new and innovative techniques and equipment to improve operations and save energy.
- Conduct code compliance assessments and develop solutions for nonconformance.
- Assess condition of existing building systems, equipment and site infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.
- Conduct failure mode & effects analysis (FMEA) and identify maintenance strategies to mitigate failure risks.
- Apply reliability-centered maintenance techniques to develop maintenance strategies to improve reliability.
- Formulate electrical project plans that integrate other subject areas such as architectural, structural, civil, and mechanical, etc.
- Conduct construction inspections to ensure compliance with designs.
- Provide construction support to rectify issues between proposed designs and existing field conditions.
- Collaborate with maintenance electrical personnel on efforts related to low-to-medium voltage electrical distribution systems.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant, for at least one of the hiring organizations, will be required to work onsite.
For a different hiring organization, the selected applicant will be eligible for telecommuting, and they must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution with seven (7) years of relevant low voltage electrical system design experience; or a Master’s degree in power systems plus three (3) years of relevant low voltage electrical system design experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE L-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
- NM Professional Engineering (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or able to obtain a Professional Engineer license.
- AutoCAD, REVIT or SKM design and drafting skills, MS Office Software skills.
- Knowledge and experience in the following:
- Maintenance requirements for high and low voltage system components including but not limited to substation equipment, transformers, relays, switches, over-current protection devices, capacitor banks, overhead and underground distribution feeders, and underground duct banks.
- Using power flow, cost estimating, and project management software.
- Facilities engineering, design and construction, and industry standards/ practices.
- Knowledge of National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards (1910 and 1926) and Life Safety Code. Also, NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze system drawings, construction plans, and system one-line schematics.
- Experience with the preparation of bid documents.
- Experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting/power/systems).
- Experience in lighting designs and controls.
- Demonstrated ability to design building and infrastructure electrical systems.
- Ability to prioritize and complete high rigor tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to develop and nurture internal customer relationships while also working effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
- Knowledge and experience in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Certification System or equivalent DOE High Performance Sustainable Building Standard Experience.
- Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Architectural Barriers Act.
