The Assistant Day Camp Director assists the Day Camp Director in overseeing the camp counselors, all aspects of day camp and management of additional program planning and delivery throughout the council’s jurisdiction. She/he ensures that all program experiences are designed and implemented based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) processes, procedures, and outcomes through utilization of the Girl Scout National Program Portfolio. This position includes the planning of innovative camp programming at day camps and acting as an onsite director for day camp during the camp season, including all setup and breaking down of camp. Summer Camp programs begin July 5 through August 4, 2023. Camp Programs are delivered Monday-Friday, and shifts run from 7am – 5:30pm. Girl Scout curriculum and corresponding training provided.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may need to be assigned per the needs of the council and areas of supervision.

  • Ability to lead in Camp Director’s absence.
  • Manages group time and daily activities and assist in the daily functions of the day camp operations, including implementation of schedules and procedures.
  • Supervise the day camp counselors to ensure that the program needs are being reached and their assigned tasks are completed.
  • Assures campers are properly supervised and safe at all time.
  • Will be the first contact for parents and campers.
  • Will check in and check out campers.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within camp program guidelines and the GS program; and actively able to participate in all program areas as needed.
  • Ensure that all program activities conform to Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada’s risk and safety management system, and comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as GSUSA policies related to health, safety, and security.
  • Enforce all camp rules and policies, including personnel policies.
  • Enforce a high level of safety and health standards, following emergency procedures as outlined.
  • Food service coordination.
  • Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off camp property.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with the camp director when appropriate.
  • Ensures that equipment, supplies, and facilities are used wisely and taken care of appropriately; report needed repairs promptly.
  • Maintain a well-stocked first-aid kit, minimize risks through vigilant supervision, provide immediate aid, and report accidents and incidents promptly, and respond in emergencies.
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members. Ensure communications and resources are delivered to participants and parents. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience
  • Respond to family and volunteer concerns about day camp and program(s)
  • Serve as a role model to campers and staff through your actions, appearance, manners, language, and general conduct; follow and uphold all behavior and safety standards.
  • May perform administrative tasks (filing, record keeping, etc.) as needed
  • Participate and assist in the pre-camp staff training, all staff meetings, and post-camp closing.
  • Become familiar with Employee Manual and Camp Program Staff Handbook
  • Become familiar with COVID-19 safety protocols and workplace guidelines
  • Complete online training videos and quizzes
  • Other duties as assigned by the Camp Director

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years of age with High School Diploma or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain such certifications
  • Excellent, effective English language abilities, both oral and written. Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
  • Proven ability to grow participation in youth camp program, outdoor and/or environmental education, recreation administration, and/or similar area
  • Supervisory experience, including strong leadership skills to motivate and retain high-performing staff
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to relate and interact with all age levels and adults in a positive manner
  • Proven capability to work in a collaborative, service-focused environment
  • Ability to supervise staff and campers
  • Ability to work as part of the team
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality with work-related information
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills for problem-solving and conflict management capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize and work independently; and with exceptionalattention to detail
  • Ability to communicate and train staff in camp program and procedures, safety regulations, and emergency procedures
  • Ability to complete online trainings required during pre-camp
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit upright for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to train staff in outdoor activity procedures
  • Ability to work in the heat, sun, and rain
  • Ability to work camp, including but not limited to, hiking, biking, standing, cooking, uneven terrain and other such outdoor elements
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Valid Driver’s license required
  • COVID-19 vaccination is highly recommended but not required.
  • Current Girl Scouts of U.S.A. membership required upon hire.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This job functions out of Councils headquarters which provides an environment as follows, professional workspace, along with a retail shop, front desk, outdoor courtyard and training center. Off-site work is frequently required and will take place at community locations including schools, churches, office buildings, parks, campgrounds, and other settings as needed.
