All Covenant House Alaska program staff work as advocates and allies for youth experiencing homelessness and human trafficking.
Position Summary
The Covey Café Manager oversees the daily operation of the Covey Café, including barista training for interns, serving customers, maintaining cleanliness/sanitation, and keeping inventory and supplies stocked appropriately. The Café Manger will oversee and work with café interns to develop and build vocational skills.
Essential Functions
- Work together with the Academy staff and partners to identify staffing, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training needs of qualified youth candidates; facilitate on-going training and development of current café staff.
- Create the tone and personality of the store by being an advocate of training, customer service, product knowledge, education, and a demonstrated commitment to CHA’s guiding principles and values.
- Employ a trauma-informed care approach in training and supervising youth interns as café baristas.
- Manage the day-to-day store operations, supply inventory, equipment upkeep.
- Ensure proper café coverage, scheduling according to the needs of business.
- Perform and train all interns on café POS duties and front and back of house functions, including opening and closing procedures.
- Maintain proper loss prevention standards, review cash handling procedures, deposit and safe procedures.
- Maintain a clean, well-merchandised store maintaining both Kaladi Brothers and CHA branding standards.
- Prepare café interns for future employment by assisting with the job search process, including writing resumes, submitting applications, and interviewing.
- Promote and practice safe work habits, identifying and resolving potential safety hazards, operational inconsistencies and any team member or customer incidents.
- Document accidents, conduct initial investigation and determination of root cause in the interest of maintaining a safe work environment.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Keep supervisor fully informed at all times.
Education
Associate degree in Education, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology or related field required.
Experience
Experience working with adolescent or disadvantaged populations preferred; life, volunteer, and internship experience will be considered. Supervisory experience in restaurant or café management preferred.

- Understand and comply with all principles of Trauma-Informed Care; willingness to acquire basic concepts in care coordination for adolescents and young adults and incorporate into service-provision
- Is approachable, relatable, builds rapport well, and practices active listening with individuals of varied cultural backgrounds, embracing differences in behavior and lifestyle choices
- Ability to establish appropriate boundaries while developing and nurturing supportive relationships with students
- Ability to use an individualized approach to motivate youth to achieve their education, employment, and other goals in both classroom and one-on-one settings
- Able to articulate successes and challenges experienced by youth to inform program development and effectively communicate with CHA staff, community partners, and funding sources
- Ability to develop curriculum and educational opportunities consistent with the JAG model
- Organizational abilities and level of responsibility conducive to prepping curriculum, keeping supplies inventoried and stocked, and tracking and reporting on grant-funded purchases
- Knowledge of community social service resources to assist youth with needs related to housing, employment, education, and social-emotional well-being
- Knowledge of crisis intervention and ability to address conflict between youth exhibiting challenging behaviors; able to respond quickly and safely while continuing to be a settling influence in crisis situations and emergencies
- High degree of sensitivity to and respect for diversity and cultural issues involved in working with individuals of varying ethnicities and income.
- Understand best practices in the areas of prevention, recognition, and response to suspected and identified victims of human trafficking.
- Willingness to engage with partner human trafficking service agencies and law enforcement.
- Understand the intersectionality of youth homelessness, mental health, substance misuse, human trafficking, and poverty.
- Ability to relate with and provide instruction to a diverse group of young individuals with varying backgrounds and life circumstances
- Can maintain confidentiality while understanding and complying with requirements of mandated reporting, duty to warn, HIPAA, and other limits to confidentiality
- Willingness to utilize training opportunities in support of personal and professional growth, competence development, and to increase overall capacity to serve youth every day
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient with standard computer operating systems; ability to navigate Microsoft Office Suite, online databases, and other programs and websites as required
- Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours as well as Holidays and weekends as needed
- Willingness and ability to attain a CPR/First Aid Certification
- Acceptable driving record assessed through CHA’s Drivers Acceptability Matrix
- Have a good driving record
- Pass federal, state, and local background check investigations
Working Conditions
- Position is based in a Café style setting within the Youth Engagement Center.
- Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent within café, office, and residential environments.
- Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
- Must be able to remain in stationary, sitting and/or standing, position for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move within the café and office to access equipment.
- Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
- Consistently operates restaurant equipment; Grinders, Brewers, etc.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairways within a wide variety of facilities with and possibly without the assistance of an elevator
- Must be able to routinely handle objects up to 40 pounds
