Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:

The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations, including a central museum based in Indianapolis. Salary:

The starting salary range for this position is $65,000 per year.

About the Job:

The Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager serves as the primary writer and stewardship manager for grants and foundations. This position reports to and works closely with the Director of Corporate Relations. They are responsible for the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals and reports to foundations. In addition, the manager cultivates, solicits, and manages a portfolio of foundations and corporate relationships.

The Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager works with ISMHS staff state-wide, various departments, and manages relationships both internally and externally. They will be expected to raise funds from foundations for but not limited to education programs, community engagement, exhibits, collections care, general operating support, restricted grant opportunities among other funding needs.

A Day in the Life:

  • Responsible for a variety of writing projects for foundation giving, including letters of intent, narrative proposals, reports, online grant applications, briefings, acknowledgement letters, and other written materials.
  • Manage the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals and reports to foundations.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and manage a small portfolio of assigned foundations and corporate relationships.
  • Work with departments at Indiana State Museum and across 12 Historic Sites (ISMHS) to gather information necessary for proposals and reports. Compile and format various grant attachments.
  • Conduct prospect research to evaluate foundations and align them with ISMHS priorities.
  • Participate in phone inquiries or other face-to-face explorations with funding prospects.
  • Coordinate site visits, exhibition tours, and behind-the-scenes tours for funders with ISMHS leadership.
  • Represent ISMHS at all funder meetings and events.
  • Manage recognition for foundations for annual report, donor wall, marketing, etc.
  • Collect and maintain relevant Museum information for corporate and foundation proposals (demographics, visitor, education and program attendance, etc.)
  • Maintain current, supporting documents for proposals including: operating budget, financial statements and reports, board of trustees list, donor lists, etc.
  • Maintain foundation documents in electronic files as well as records in the Altru database.
  • Supports ISMHS events, tours, and other stewardship activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Skilled facilitator, capable of articulating institutional objectives to funders
  • Persuasive writing skills required.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and formal presentations/public speaking required.
  • High level of organization and accuracy
  • Handle information confidentially and manage donor relationships with high degree of personal integrity.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and ability to work effectively across multiple departments and at all levels of the organization.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of creativity, energy, self-initiative, and responsive follow-through.
  • Minimum of three years of institutional fundraising experience, with an emphasis on proposal development, grant reporting and donor relations required.

What You’ll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Substitution: Academic training plus comparable work experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s degree where appropriate.
  • 5 years of fundraising experience; working with foundations and government agencies preferred.
  • Demonstrated success pursuing and securing donor contributions, and managing donor relationships.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with enthusiasm for writing and verbally communicating the organization’s mission and need for support.
  • Proven project management skills, to manage small- and large-scale grant awards, including monitoring budgets.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to track donor plans and meet overlapping deadlines throughout the year.
  • Confidence working in collaboration with colleagues, as well as independently.
  • Customer-service-oriented and reliable with follow-through.
  • Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, critical thinking, and ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment, maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and handle situations with diplomacy.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment where priorities and direction may change frequently.

ISMHS Expectations

  • Visitor-centric: Develop, provide and/or execute innovative approaches to connect with visitors to all 12 locations within the museum system. Make visitors feel welcome when they arrive, cared for and engaged during their visit and feel eager to return.
  • Utilize 12-location museum system: Serve as a resource and seek out resources from appropriate divisions across the entire ISMHS museum system. Help ISMHS stakeholders (visitors, members, partners, educators, etc.) understand the value they receive by engaging with the ISMHS locations throughout the state.
  • Externally focused: Seek out opportunities to showcase our presence in the community/communities where I live and work by serving on community committees/boards, engaging in community events, attending community conversations about issues that may either affect the ISMHS or that we can influence, write articles for community/trade publications about my area of expertise at the ISMHS and talk to my friends, family and professional contacts about the ISMHS.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
