SALARY RANGE: $79,996.80 – $111,280.00

PURPOSE:

As the Beryllium Laboratory (Be Lab) Associate Manager, performs duties as a Medical Technologist to maintain quality of laboratory operations from a clinical laboratory perspective as the volume of testing increases significantly. Uses education, training, and past experience from clinical laboratories to provide scientific background for troubleshooting problems with lab procedures, equipment and analysis of data. Manage and oversee at least two employees. Supervises the maintenance of lab inventory. In consultation with Lab Manager, participate in identifying and developing appropriate new or modified methodologies for use in laboratory including policies, procedures, equipment and processes for result determination, and analysis of data.

The ORISE Beryllium Laboratory is one of only three facilities in the United States currently performing the Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Test (BeLPT) and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). The procedures involve testing lymphocytes from beryllium exposed workers to determine whether their cells have become sensitized to beryllium. In this test, lymphocytes are separated and cultured with varying concentrations of beryllium. The cells are observed for increased metabolic activity as seen in cell division and are compared to control cells cultured without exposure to beryllium. The BeLPT results are an indicator of beryllium sensitivity and a possible indicator for Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD).

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical duties in the laboratory including possess all parts of the BeLPT process knowledge, skills, and analysis.
  • Continue in rotation on all lab benches: harvest, triturating, cell culture, analysis, log in and weekend coverage.
  • Manage staff:
    • Plan, organize, direct and schedule work and PTO.
    • Evaluate and Initiate actions and approve or recommend approval of hires, disciplinary actions, leaves of absence, promotions, reductions-in-force, performance including Catalytic Coaching.
    • Completes the training of all new lab staff.
    • Evaluation, salary increases, terminations of employment for cause, separations, transfers, and other personnel actions.
  • Manages daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly Quality Controls (QC).
  • Places all orders for lab areas, instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Responsible for reviewing reagents.
  • Creates and organizing all records.
  • Assigns and rotates duties, maintains contact with all vendors to the staff, ensure sufficient supply chain of all products.
  • Manages lab’s annual Blanket orders.
  • Delegation of Authority for Purchase Card approval.
  • Assist Lab Manager to identify and develop appropriate new or modified methodologies for use in the laboratory including policies, procedures, equipment, instrumentation, and analysis processes.
  • Assist in selection of data for result determination lab equipment.
  • Assist Lab Manager and Quality Management (QM)/Quality Assurance (QA) technologist to ensure instrumentation and analysis QC is completed according to lab’s QM/QA policies.
  • Participate in serum evaluation., selection of lab equipment and suggest upgrades for lab space and/or equipment.
  • Serve as back-up Administrator for Media Lab and Instrumentation/Equipment QC Designee.
  • Fully participate in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and CAP audits and accreditation process. Create and monitor preparation timeline. Be available for onsite inspection.
  • Prepare itinerary, handouts, and records for Laboratory Director Quarterly meeting.
  • Delegation of authority during lab manager absences.
  • Assist with ORAU/Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) required reporting.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, biology, chemistry or physical sciences or related field and 4-6 years of directly related experience.

  • Experience in any section of a laboratory where clinical tests are performed, test results reported to a physician on a regular schedule, and patient confidentiality maintained is a prerequisite.
  • Experience in preparing a laboratory for an inspection by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for certification, ISO interacting with patients in a dignified and Safety audits is highly recommended.
  • Ability to discuss test results in a professional manner and underlying scientific basis in performing phlebotomies with a minimum of the BeLPT with physicians is required.
  • A background in basic computer skills (including Word and Excel) is needed for running/learning the specific programs used to calculations applied to the LPT.
  • Must be licensed by the State of Tennessee as a laboratory professional to analyze and sign laboratory results to interpret.
  • Must be licensed by the raw data for the BeLPT. The individual must have the State of Tennessee License as a Laboratory Professional Supervisor-General to work with a multidisciplinary team that includes laboratory technologists, safety professionals, computer support personnel, financial and budget personnel, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and physicians.
  • Prior personnel management experience is preferred.

*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
