Description
Cary’s Cultural Arts Education Program is seeking an enthusiastic and creative artist who thrives in a dynamic environment and has a passion for helping artists of all ages explore their emerging talents in visual art disciplines such as drawing, painting, 3D and mixed media. The Visual Art Instructor will guide beginner and intermediate artists to develop foundational artistic skills, integrating art history to design engaging lesson plans.

Must be available to teach some weekdays and weekday evenings, summer camps, and some weekends. The number of hours varies throughout the year. Must be willing to teach at the Cary Arts Center, pop-up locations, The Hive, Downtown Cary Park, and other town community centers.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Typical Tasks

  • Communicates with supervisor to propose and evaluate classes and camps;
  • Develops age- and skill-level appropriate curriculum for educational art classes;
  • Teaches art skills and concepts to youth and teens at beginning and intermediate levels;
  • Teaches some art skills and concepts to adults;
  • Prepares lesson plans that incorporate art skills, art concepts, and references;
  • Works with the supply coordinator to make supply requests for classes;
  • Gathers and prepares materials for classes;
  • Sets up and takes down classroom equipment and supplies as necessary for teaching;
  • Uses classroom management skills to engage all participants in lessons;
  • Works in different environmental conditions indoors and potentially outdoors;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of art instructional techniques; knowledge of art history; strong organizational skills; ability and willingness to teach youth; ability to communicate effectively; ability to deal with the public in a firm but tactful manner; ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the facility, division and department.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have a four-year degree or equivalent experience in a visual art-related field.

One year of teaching experience preferred.

Conditions of Employment
