General Description

This is a trainee position designed to teach the responsibilities associated with the daily care and feeding of animals in the Rochester Animal Services Shelter. The traineeship lasts up to 12 months. Trainees perform various duties and tasks under direct supervision from higher level Animal Services personnel. Related duties are performed as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. (See “

Typical Work Activities

  • Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, runs, cat room, dishes, and floors in the kennel area;
  • Feeds animals daily, performs routine water checks and ensures each cage has a required card;
  • Examines animals for health, behavior, and safety issues and notifies a supervisor of concerns;
  • Assists with euthanasia of animals that are irremediably ill, injured, or pose a serious threat to public safety, as needed;
  • Performs client service activities such as adoption counseling, escorting clients to the kennel area and answering questions;
  • Monitors the animal visitation room;
  • Launders animal supplies, such as blankets;
  • Assists in the administration of medications and vaccines;
  • Performs census of sheltered animals when so instructed;
  • Completes simple forms, both paper and electronic and works within records management system;
  • Assists with receiving, organizing, and storage of purchased and donated supplies and equipment;
  • Provides guidance and support for volunteers;
  • Provides care-related support for Foster Care Program;
  • Attends training; Disposes of trash daily;
  • Observes all safety rules and regulations;
  • Maintains an attitude that is conducive to a good relationships with other personnel, volunteers, and clients and also promotes trust;
  • Maintains interior and exterior of facility for safety of employees and public as requested by supervisory personnel;
  • Performs shelter enrichment activities including participating with canine playgroup sessions and preparing and providing a variety of other enrichment items.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalent
